Subjugate 一词逆构自 subjugation （征服、克制、从属），或者源自拉丁语 subiugare （征服、制服，字面义“置于轭下”）的过去分词 subiugatus 。
该词最早出现于15世纪初，相应也是用来表示“征服、制服、使服从、使屈从”，常作正式用语并使用被动语态，主要指通过武力征服强迫某人或某个群体服从，并使之完全处于统治或控制之中，如同奴隶那般，比如：
- 被征服的民族
a subjugated race - 他们大动干戈想要控制阿富汗人，但只持续了10年就无果而终了。
