Steer 是本周《经济学人》（2025年3月15日刊）标题为“China’s super-smart Tesla-killers”一文中出现的一个单词：

Everyone is watching to see when Chinese regulators will allow a move from L2, whereby cars can steer, accelerate and brake on their own with a human in the car, to L3, which requires no hands or eyes on the road in certain situations.

从拼写上来看， steer 与小站（微信公众号：田间小站）推送过的 sneer, peer 和 sheer 有着相同的结尾，几者可以一并联想记忆。

从词源上来看， steer 一词源自 stīeran ，其本义是指为船舶“操舵”，后来拓展指“驾驶”船、车、飞机等，即通过转动舵（rudder）或舵轮（helm）来引导或控制船只、车辆或飞机的运动。比如：

• 你划桨，我来掌舵。
  You row and I'll steer.
• 她把碰碰车开进大门。
  She steered the bumper car through the entrance.

从“操纵船只、车辆或飞机等朝某个方向运动”的概念出发， steer 便被用来引申指“操纵、控制、引导”某人或某物按照所希望的方向前进或发展。比如：

• 他带他的独子穿过骚动的人群。
  He steered his sole son through the turbulent crowd.
• 临时联合政府的主要任务将是引导国家走向民主。
  The main task of the provisional coalition government will be to steer the country towards democracy.

而本义指“绕开、避开”障碍物或危险的习语  steer clear of sb/sth 便被用来引申指“绕开、避开”令人不快或危险的人或事物。比如：

• 你最好离他远点儿。他有被害妄想症。
  You'd best steer clear of him. He has persecutory delusions.

用作名词时， steer 相应表示“关于驾驶或引路的指示”以及“指点、建议、劝告、忠告”。比如：

• 征求建议
  ask for a steer
• 误导某人
  give sb a bum steer
• 给某人友好的忠告
  give sb a friendly steer

值得注意的是， steer 同小站推送过的 stern, fray, trump 等一样，也是个同形异义词。它还有一个源自古英语 steor （阉小公牛）的名词含义指“犍牛、阉公牛”或者说“肉用公牛”。

那么回到上面《经济学人》的句子，其句意也就是说：所有人都在关注中国监管机构何时会准许从 L2 级自动驾驶（汽车可以在有人的情况下自行转向、加速和刹车）升级到 L3 级自动驾驶（在某些情况下无需驾驶员手动操作或目视道路）。
