Cusp 是本周《经济学人》（2025年3月15日刊）标题为“China’s super-smart Tesla-killers”一文中出现的一个单词：

The boss of Xpeng, a Chinese electric-vehicle (EV) maker that is one of the frontrunners in the self-driving tech race, says that autonomous driving is on the cusp of a “ChatGPT moment”.

从词源上来看， cusp 一词源自拉丁语 cuspis （点、头、矛、尖头），最早于16世纪80年代进入英语，起初用在占星术（astrology）中表示“天宫入口、黄道记号尖端”，也就是黄道十二宫的“两宫会切的时辰”。比如：

• 这个又高又瘦的女人位居管理层要职。她生于室女宫和天秤宫会切的时辰。
  This tall angular woman is quite high up in the management hierarchy. She was born on the cusp between Virgo and Libra.

在西方占星文化中，一般认为两宫的会切处象征着两种能量的交汇，因而在这个时辰出生的人会兼具两个相邻星座的双重性质（inherit qualities from both neighboring signs），如下图所示：

从两宫会切的概念出发， cusp 便被用来引申指两条曲线相交的“尖点、尖头、会切点、顶点”，包括：

• 牙尖
  the cusp of a tooth
• 月牙儿的尖角
  the cusp of a crescent
• 抛物线的顶点
  the cusp of a parabola

不过更为常见的则是用 cusp 喻指介于两个截然不同的状态之间的或者说将要进入某个特定状态的“交接点、临界点、分界线、转折点、拐点”，常用搭配 on the cusp of 表示“处于……的边缘”并后接某个重大事件或状态，特别是政治、社会、文化、技术等方面的变革。比如：

• 即将成年
  on the cusp of adulthood
• 即将取得重大发现
  on the cusp of a major discovery
• 勉强能接受
  only on the cusp of acceptability

那么回到上面《经济学人》的句子，其句意也就是说：在自动驾驶技术竞赛中处于领跑地位的中国电动汽车制造商小鹏的老板表示，自动驾驶正处于“ChatGPT时刻”的临界点。
