Stronghold 是本周《经济学人》（2025年1月11日刊）标题为“How far will Donald Trump go to get rid of illegal immigrants?”一文中出现的一个单词：
They have “occupied” parts of America; their strongholds are a “war zone”.
从拼写上来看不难发现 stronghold 就是由两个熟词 strong + hold 双拼而来。而从词源上来看，该词最早出现于15世纪，其中 hold 取其名词古义“堡垒、要塞”而来。虽然起初 stronghold 曾用来表示“监禁之处”，但到了15世纪末后则开始主要用来表示“堡垒、要塞、据点”，即为抵御攻击而设立坚固防御工事的地方，可以为其中的居住者提供保护。比如：
- 坚不可摧的要塞
an impregnable stronghold
从牢固据点这个概念出发， stronghold 进而引申指对特定信仰、事业或群体（尤其是政党）有着大量坚定支持的“据点、大本营、根据地、势力强大的地方”。比如：
- 游击队在山区的根据地
guerrilla strongholds in the mountains - 佐治亚州长期以来一直被认为是共和党的大本营。但在这个不同寻常的选举季，它越来越有可能成为一个摇摆州。
Georgia has long been considered a Republican stronghold. But in this unusual election season, it's looking more and more like it could be a swing state.
此外在生物学领域中， stronghold 还被用来拓展指某种动物的“主要栖息地”。比如：
- 孙德尔本斯是孟加拉国仅存老虎的最后的主要栖息地。
Sundarbans is the last stronghold of Bangladesh's remaining tigers.
那么回到上面《经济学人》的句子，其句意也就是说：他们“占领”了美国的部分地区；他们的据点就是“战区”。
