Swarm 是本周《经济学人》（2024年12月21日刊）标题为“Is the age of American air superiority coming to an end?”一文中出现的一个单词：
Some argue that stealthy jets are too expensive and should be replaced by swarms of cheap drones.
从拼写上来看， swarm 一词比较好记，就是在熟词 warm 前面多加了一个字母 s 而已，两者可以一并联想记忆。
从词源上来看， swarm 一词源自古英语 swearm （蜂群；众多），主要作名词表示“一大群、一大窝”，常用搭配 swarm of sth 指一大群或密集的蜜蜂、蝗虫、白蚁等昆虫集团飞行或迁移，特别是大量蜜蜂与新受精的蜂后一起离开蜂巢，以建立新的蜂群。比如：
- 一大群苍蝇
a swarm of flies
将这个概念用在人身上，便可以指“一大群、一大批”像集团迁移的蜂群那般朝着同一个方向快速移动的人。比如：
- 一大群人把大厅围住了。
A swarm of people encircled the lobby.
那么用作动词时， swarm 除了表示蜜蜂、蝗虫、白蚁等飞行昆虫“成群飞行”外，也可以用来指人“蜂拥、成群地涌动”。比如：
- 人们蜂拥而至，前来帮她。
People swarmed to help her.
而这反过来也可以用短语动词 swarm with sb/sth 表示“到处是人或物”或者说“挤满人或物”，常意味着大量的人或物四处忙碌移动。比如：
- 肯定有什么事情发生了——首都现在到处是警察。
Something must be going on - the capital city is now swarming with police.
那么回到上面《经济学人》的句子，其句意也就是说：一些人认为隐形喷气式飞机太贵了，应该用成群的廉价无人机取代。
