heir(ess)

1.heir后面接介词to，偶尔接of。例如：

  • Jack is heir to（或of）his father.
  • Jack is heir to his father's property.
  • Jack is heir to his father's strength and his mother's grace.
  • We Chinese are heirs of honesty and industry.

2.heir是阳性形式，heiress是阴性形式，但事实上现在heiress通常指西方社会里的“已得到或将得到大宗遗产的女子”，尤其指这种作为男子求婚的对象的女子。除了这种意思以外，说女性的继承人往往不用heiress而用heir。例如：Their only heir was their daughter.

3.heir不可用来指“已得到或将得到大宗遗产的男子”。
