1.boy friend和gentleman friend都指女子的男朋友，girl friend, lady friend和woman friend都指男子的女朋友。在不须说明性别的时候都不该用，单用friend就是了。boy friend有时指“小朋友”。
2.He is a friend of mine当然不可改作He is a friend of me。He is my friend往往有“他跟我很好”的含意。He is a friend of Mr Shaw's比He is a friend of Mr Shaw普通，第二种形式往往有“他跟Shaw先生很好”的含意，多用在文字里，很少用在口语里。He is a friend to Mr Shaw是“他经常帮助或照顾Shaw先生”。
3.“交朋友”该说make friends，说“跟…交朋友”该说make friends with...。例如：She will be glad to make friends with him. 但“交一个朋友”可以说make a friend。She will be glad to make friends with him里的friends不可改作friend。但可以把make friends with改作make a friend of。不过make a friend of不及make friends with普通，而且着重在“使…做自己的朋友”的意思。
4.be friends作“友善”解，be friends with作“跟…友善”解，如She is still friends和She is still friends with him。get friends with和become friends with作“开始跟…友善”解。
5.信函里的称呼语用Dear Friend或My dear Friend现在很不普通，最好不用。
