深入解读
从词源上来看, motley 一词可能源自古英语 mot (微粒、斑点),最早出现于14世纪末,用来表示织物“杂色的、五颜六色的”,比如古时候弄臣或小丑等穿的“彩衣”就叫做“a motley coat”,而“a motley clown”也就是“身穿彩衣的小丑”。
从这个概念出发, motley 便被用来引申指“混杂的、成分杂乱的、杂七杂八的”,常作贬义词使用,多意味着以偶然、杂乱(haphazard)或者非常多变的排列方式存在着对比显著且格格不入的多样颜色、外观或特征等。比如:
