深入解读
从拼写上来看， entreat 一词比较好记，就是在熟词 treat 前面多加了一个前缀 en- （使成某种状态、致使……、使之如……、作成……）。
从词源上来看， entreat 源自由前缀 en- +古法语 traiter （对待）而来的古法语 entraiter （对待），经英国法语 entretier 于14世纪进入英语后，最初也是用来表示以某种特定方式“对待、对付”，不过这一含义现已不再流行。
但从这个概念出发，等到了15世纪初， entreat 开始发展出现在的主要含义指“恳求、乞求、请求”，常作正式用语使用，侧重指热切或急切地努力说服某人做某事或者克服某人的阻力，尤其是通过讨好对方。比如：
- 他乞求分居妻子再给他一次机会。
He entreated his estranged wife for another chance. - 他习惯于发号施令，而不是恳求他人。
He was accustomed to command, not to entreat.
