深入解读
从拼写上来看, entreat 一词比较好记,就是在熟词 treat 前面多加了一个前缀 en- (使成某种状态、致使……、使之如……、作成……)。
从词源上来看, entreat 源自由前缀 en- +古法语 traiter (对待)而来的古法语 entraiter (对待),经英国法语 entretier 于14世纪进入英语后,最初也是用来表示以某种特定方式“对待、对付”,不过这一含义现已不再流行。
但从这个概念出发,等到了15世纪初, entreat 开始发展出现在的主要含义指“恳求、乞求、请求”,常作正式用语使用,侧重指热切或急切地努力说服某人做某事或者克服某人的阻力,尤其是通过讨好对方。比如:
- 他乞求分居妻子再给他一次机会。
He entreated his estranged wife for another chance. - 他习惯于发号施令,而不是恳求他人。
He was accustomed to command, not to entreat.
