深入解读
Ulterior 是一个与常见单词 interior （内部；内陆；内政；内景；室内的；内景的；内地的；内心的）和 exterior （外部；外表；外部的；外景的）有着相同结尾的单词，三者可以一并联想记忆。
从词源上来看， ulterior 一词源自拉丁语 ulterior （更远的、更遥远的、更偏远的、在更远的一边的），最早于17世纪40年代进入英语后，也是用来表示“较远的、在特定界限以外的”以及“日后的、将来的、进一步的”。比如：
- 较远的地区
an ulterior region - 下一步的行动
an ulterior action - 与当前讨论关系不大的一项建议
a suggestion ulterior to the purposes of the present discussion
从这个概念出发，等到了1735年后， ulterior 开始引申出现在的主要含义指“隐秘不明的、有意隐瞒的、别有用心的、不可告人的、矢口否认的”，一般仅用在名词前，常意味着某个秘密的且通常是不正当的动机、理由、目的等被人故意隐瞒或矢口否认，并以此利用别人或占人便宜。比如：
- 他声称只是想帮助哈里，但我怀疑他有不可告人的动机。
He claims he just wants to help Harry but I suspect he has an ulterior motive. - 她说总统也许只是在做样子而已。背后的动机无疑是为了拉选票。
She says the President may just be posturing. No doubt with the ulterior object of catching votes.
