今天小站来和各位聊聊 inch 这个熟词。
说起该词来，头脑里对应的就是“英寸”这么一个概念，通常还可以缩写为 in. 或符号 ″ ，指的是一种长度单位，等于2.54厘米。而12英寸就构成了1英尺（1 foot = 30.48cm）。
说到这里，老铁们可能还会想起小站之前在小词详解栏目中推送过的 fathom （英寻）一词，它是一个英式深度单位，等于6英尺或72英寸，约等于1.83米。
将 inch 与 foot 和 fathom 的长度进行对比的话，不难发现 inch 是其中最短的，仅相当于成人大拇指指尖到指节的长度。因此 inch 常用来喻指数量、距离、程度等上的“少许、一点儿”。
比如一辆失控的汽车猛地撞上了金属围栏（a runaway car hurtled against the metal fence），司机差点丧命（escaped death by an inch），车子也险些撞到我们（missed us by inches）。那司机完全是一副伦敦金融城商界人士的派头（looked every inch the City businessman），他一点一点仔细查看了车祸现场（examined the scene of the car accident inch by inch）之后，试图把赔偿金额谈低一些但我们寸步不让（we wouldn't budge/give/move an inch）。因为我们对这种人了如指掌（know every inch of such people），知道一旦松口他就会得寸进尺（give him an inch and he will take a mile）。
就是如此熟悉的一个 inch ，当它出现在《经济学人》2024年4月13日刊的下面这句话时，你还认识吗？
Mr Trump first inched ahead of Mr Biden, the incumbent, in national surveys last September, and has held a narrow lead for most of 2024.
别一眼看到突如其来的动词用法就慌，其实这不过是从 move inch by inch 这个概念引申而来的含义，主要表示“缓慢移动”，尤其是“谨慎移动”，侧重指（使）某物朝着某一特定方向缓慢或小幅且小心地移动。比如：
- 原油生产一步步缓慢上升。
The production of crude oil inched upward. - 联合政党在慢慢努力达成共识。
The coalition parties are inching towards an agreement. - 那个胆小的女孩开着一辆改装过的碰碰车小心地缓缓前行。
The timid girl inched the modified bumper car forward.
那么回到上面《经济学人》的句子，其句意也就是说：特朗普在去年9月的全国调查中首次一步步地超越现任总统拜登，并在2024年的大部分时间里一直以微弱优势领先。
