深入解读
Bewilder 一词比较好记,就是在熟词 wild 的比较级 wilder 前面多了个 be 这两个字母。不过从词源上来看,该词并非直接与现在的 wilder 相关,而是由前缀 be- (完全的)+可能逆构自 wilderness (荒野)的古单词 wilder (引入歧途,引诱进入荒野)构成而来。
该词最早出现于17世纪80年代,起初用来表示“使迷路、使迷失方向”。比如:
- 给城里纵横交错的街道弄得晕头转向
be bewildered by the maze of streets in the town
从这个概念出发, bewilder 进而很自然地引申出现在的主要含义指“使迷惑、使糊涂、难住”,强调如迷失方向那般因迷惑不解或惊愕而心态混乱或慌乱,不知所措,从而使人几乎不可能进行清晰的思考和完全的理解。比如:
- 亚历克斯不祥的沉默伤害了她,让她不知所措。
The ominous silence from Alex had hurt and bewildered her. - 他因这番直击要害的批评而万念俱灰,茫然不知所措。
