深入解读
Engross 一词源自拉丁语短语 in grosso （批发），最早于15世纪由与古法语 en detail （小规模的、零星地、零散地）相对的 en gros （大量的、大体积的、批发的）进入英语，起初用来表示“大量收购……”以垄断市场或垄断居奇。
从这个概念出发，等到了1709年后， engross 开始引申出现在的主要含义指“使全神贯注”或者“占去……的全部注意力或兴趣”，侧重强调如囤货居奇那般将注意力和时间完全占据，并能够将一切其他事物排除在外。比如：
- 他全身心地投入工作结果损害了他的健康。
He was engrossed in his job to the detriment of his health. - 昆斯投身于商界，那是一个大部分现代艺术家所不齿的圈子。
Koons has engrossed himself in a world of commercialism that most modern artists disdain.
