深入解读
Evaporate 是一个与常见单词 corporate (全体的、共同的;公司的;联合的;企业集团)有着相同结尾的单词,两者可以一并联想记忆。
从词源上来看, evaporate 一词源自拉丁语 evaporare (分散在蒸气中),15世纪初由 evaporare 的过去分词 evaporatum 进入英语,即用来表示“(使)蒸发、(使)挥发”以及通过加热“(使)脱水、去除……中的水分”。比如:
- 加热直至水全部蒸发。
Heat until all the water has evaporated. - 湿气被吸到织物表面从而蒸发。
Moisture is drawn to the surface of the fabric so that it evaporates.
等到了17世纪10年代后, evaporate 开始用来引申指逐渐“(使)消失、(使)消散、(使)衰减”,侧重指像水变成蒸汽那般(使)某个东西悄无声息、不引人注意地完全逝去,也可以用来描述人偷偷摸摸、谨慎或突然地离去,并进一步引申指“死亡”。比如:
- 他的盛怒渐渐消失,想大哭一场。

值得注意的是,在物理学中, evaporate 还可以用来表示“放射、发射”中子、电子等,比如从原子核放射出中子(evaporate neutrons from a nucleus)。
