词源趣谈 | serendipity 意外发现珍奇事物的本领

serendipity 指意外发现有趣事物的本领。1754年，英国作家霍勒斯·沃尔浦尔（Horace Walpole，1717—1797）创作了波斯神话故事《锡兰三王子》（The Three Princes of Serendip），从而创造了serendipity 一词。故事中的英雄们拥有如此才能：

they were always making discoveries, by accidents and sagacity, of things which they were not in quest of.
他们总能凭着运气和睿智，发现他们并没有寻求的东西。

锡兰（Serendip）是斯里兰卡（Sri Lanka）的旧称。
