词源趣谈 | meat 肉（尤指哺乳动物的肉）

古英语中 meat 不单指食用的肉类，而是指所有食物。这个早期的意义可见于《钦定版圣经》中《创世纪》（Genesis）第1章第30节：

To every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat.
至于一切地上走兽，一切空中之鸟，一切有生命的地上爬物，我赐青草为食物。

自 17世纪始，它的含义缩减为单指动物肉。该词的原义还保留于短语meat and drink和sweetmeat（由糖制作或用糖加工的佳肴）中。
