gild the lily 指在已经很美好的事物上增添不必要的修饰，即多此一举、画蛇添足。

这一表达实为对莎士比亚戏剧《约翰王》（King John）第4 幕第2场的错误引用所致：

To gild refined gold, to paint the lily,
在纯金镀上金箔，替纯洁的百合花涂抹粉彩，

To throw a perfume on the violet,
紫罗兰的花瓣上浇洒人工的香水，

To smooth the ice, or add another hue
研磨光滑的冰块，或是替彩虹

Unto the rainbow, or with taper light
添上一道颜色，或是企图用微弱的烛火

To seek the beauteous eye of heaven to garnish,
