a flash in the pan 形容某事昙花一现，只是短暂成功。比如：

• People will be looking in to see how good we are now and whether our success has just been a flash in the pan.
  人们会来看看我们现在有多成功，看看我们的成功是否只是昙花一现。

这一用法可追溯至燧发枪的使用时期：触动扳机时，火药池内火光一闪，锤子击打燧石产生的火花引起火药池（in the pan）中的火药骤然间产生火光（flash），但弹药发射却以失败告终。以此比喻显耀一时，却最终一无所获、虎头蛇尾。
