above board 形容某一安排是正确的、诚实的。玩牌和赌博时需要把手、牌等一直放在板上（above the board）或桌子上，这样方能保证没有欺诈或不诚实的行为在暗地里（under the board）发生。该表达的产生即与此有关。

go by the board 中的board(s) 原指帆船两侧的船舷。如果船遭遇到了暴雨、桅杆折断，那么桅杆就可能落到船舷上或越过船舷落进水中（go by the board），再也找不到了。现今，人们赋予了这一表达比喻义，如：

All her efforts to be polite went by the board and she started to shout.
