深入解读

Respite 是一个与熟词 despite 十分形近的单词，两者在拼写上都以常见单词 spite 结尾，可以一并联想记忆。

从词源上来看，  respite 与熟词 respect 互为同源异形词，都源自拉丁语 respectus （字面义“回头或经常看某人的行为”，引申指“考虑、尊敬”）。其中 respite 于13世纪中期由古法语 respit （延期、尊敬）进入英语，最初用来表示“暂缓、暂停”，侧重指不快的义务履行前准许的“暂缓履行”或者死刑等惩罚执行前准许的“缓期执行”。比如：

  • 准予暂缓付款
    to grant a respite for payment
  • 他们宽容的老师外出，所以他们交论文的期限往后拖了一天。
    Their lenient teacher was away, so they had a day's respite before their essays were due.
