Grumble 一词源自中古荷兰语 grommen （咆哮、发出隆隆声），16世纪80年代经法语 grommeler （齿间嘀咕）或者直接由中古荷兰语 grommelen （咕哝、嘀咕、发牢骚）进入英语后，也是用来表示“抱怨、挑剔、发牢骚”，主要指以低沉的声音和粗暴的态度恶意抱怨某事，比如：
- 冲他发牢骚

She spent the evening grumbling to me about her sideline.
等到了16世纪90年代后， grumble 也被用来表示“咕隆、发哼声、咕咕叫、发隆隆声”，主要指发出低沉持续的咆哮声或隆隆声，像饥饿的胃或某些动物那样，比如：
