从词源上来看,该词源自拉丁语 castus (干净的、纯洁的、道德纯洁的),13世纪经古法语 chaste (道德纯洁的)进入英语后,最初用来表示“贞洁的、童贞的、忠贞的”,进而引申指“独身的、未婚的、禁欲的”,即戒绝婚外性行为或一切性行为的,比如:
