从词源上来看，该词源自拉丁语 castus （干净的、纯洁的、道德纯洁的），13世纪经古法语 chaste （道德纯洁的）进入英语后，最初用来表示“贞洁的、童贞的、忠贞的”，进而引申指“独身的、未婚的、禁欲的”，即戒绝婚外性行为或一切性行为的，比如：
