Dick’s mother made it a rule that if he came to the dinner table late again he w as not to speak a single word during the meal.
迪克的母亲立了一条规矩，如果他再次迟到，他在吃饭时一句话也不能说。
Yesterday he arrived, as usual, after everybody had sat down.
昨天，他像往常一样，在所有人都坐下之后到达。
As soon as he entered the room he began with, “I say, mother...” but his mother quickly reminded him of the rule.
他一进房间就开始说：“我说，妈妈……”但他的母亲很快提醒了他这条规则。
“But, mother...” he persisted.
“但是，妈妈……”他坚持说。
“Not a word ,” said the stern parent.
“一个词也不许说，”严厉的家长说。
When dinner was over, his mother asked what he wanted to say, “Oh, I only wanted to say, mother, that my little sister had fallen into the water.”
晚饭结束后，他的妈妈问他想说什么，“哦，我只想说，妈妈，我妹妹掉进水里了。”
