Insipid 一词源自晚期拉丁语 inspidus （无味的），17世纪10年代经法语 insipide （无味的）进入英语后，相应也是用来表示“无味的、乏味的、淡而无味的”，常作贬义词使用，用来形容那些无味到不会给味觉带来愉悦或刺激的食物和饮料，比如：
- 一杯淡而无味的温咖啡

从这个概念出发，到了17世纪40年代后， insipid 很自然地就被用来引申泛指“枯燥乏味的、没有趣味的、无吸引力的、令人厌烦的”，常用来形容那些让人觉得空乏、没有活力、没有个性或者说使人完全不感兴趣的人、言论、思想等，比如：
