Authorize （在英式英语中通常拼作 authorise）是一个与熟词 author 同源的单词，两者都源自于拉丁语 auctor （创造者），14世纪末经古法语 autoriser, auctoriser （批准、授权）或直接由中古拉丁语 （批准、授权）进入英语。
该词相应也是用来表示“批准、核定、许可、认可”或者“授权、委托”，主要指给予某个项目或代理人正式或权威性的许可或批准，或者必要的法律权利或权力，常含有自由裁量权（discretion），即受权者可以在授权范围内自主行事，比如：
