该词由词根 rect （直的；正确的）+动词后缀 -ify 构成，与 rectitude 一样都源自于拉丁语 rectus （直的），15世纪初先后经晚期拉丁语 rectifier （使直；使正确）和古法语 rectificare （使直；使正确）进入英语。
主要也是用来表示“改正、纠正、矫正”以及“整顿、修订、修复”，常作正式用语使用，多意味着一种更为根本的改正，使事物彻底正确、公正、公平或者得到适当的控制或管理，比如：
