When my grandfather came to live with us, he was eager to help out around the house, and he quickly became the “greeter” for my sister Gail’s many dates.
Since she was rarely ready on time, he would escort them to the living room and make small talks until she came downstairs.
One evening Gail arrived just in time to hear him call her date by the wrong name.
Grandfather quickly apologized by saying, “You know, there are
so many boys coming and going around here, it’s hard to keep all you young fellows straight.”
The next day, Gail carefully explained to him that he shouldn’t say things like that.
She was enjoying her new popularity as a college girl, and she didn’t want each date to know she was dating others.
Grandfather listened with a twinkle in his eye and told her that he understood completely.
The next evening, Gail overheard his new greeting.
“Come in!” he said, “It’s so nice to see a young fellow around here for a change.”
My sister was never late for a date again.
