今天小站来和各位聊聊 commonplace 这个单词。
一眼看去，不难发现这是一个由熟词 common + place 双拼而来的单词。由于 common 作形容词时通常用来表示“常见的、平常的、普通的”或者“共同的、共有的、共享的”，所以很容易将 commonplace 误解成“寻常地方”或“公共场所”。
实际上从词源上来看，该词字面直译自拉丁语 locus communis （广泛适用的主题），而后者又翻译自古希腊语 koinos topos （普通话题），16世纪40年代进入英语后， commonplace 原本也是用来表示“普遍接受的说法”。
不过这个含义到了16世纪50年代后，开始发展为“陈词滥调、老生常谈”以及“寒暄客套”，常作正式用语使用，主要指一种老套的想法或表达，通常就某个特定主题会习惯性地、轻易地和明显地想到或说到，比如：
- 说大班上课会降低孩子所受教育的质量已是陈词滥调了。
It is a commonplace to say that large classes dilute the quality of education that children receive. - 他们喝了几杯温吞的茶，就不断恶化的天气状况寒暄了几句。
They exchanged commonplaces about the deteriorating weather conditions over cups of tepid tea.
从老生常谈很容易拓展到司空见惯，于是 commonplace 便进一步用来表示“常见的事物、平常的事物”以及贬义指“平庸的东西”，常作正式用语使用，也就是经常做或发生的事物，以至于不再特别、无趣或没有挑战性，比如：
- 出国旅行现在是寻常的事。这对她已失去吸引力。
Foreign travel is now a commonplace. It has lost its glamour for her. - 那个勤勉的学生在求知上从不满足于浅尝辄止。
The industrious student is never content with the commonplace in intellectual attainment.
用作形容词时， commonplace 则相应表示“平常的、普通的、普遍的”以及贬义指“平淡无奇的、平淡无味的、平庸的、无创见的”，比如：
- 现在一面倒的胜利不足为奇，被大家视为理所当然。
Now lopsided victories are commonplace and taken for granted.
