Contaminate 是最近的一个热点单词，自日本核污染水（nuclear-contaminated water）于2023年8月24日下午开始排海以来， 就频频出现在外媒报道中。
该词于15世纪初由拉丁语 contaminare （污染、腐化、使混在一起变质，本义指“使相接触”）的过去分词 contaminatus 进入英语，也是用来表示“弄脏、污染”，主要指通过接触或添加外部有毒或污染物质使某物变得不洁或有害，也包括通过接触致病物质而“感染”疾病，比如：
- 受细菌感染的伤口
a wound contaminated by bacteria - 受到污染的血液/食物/土壤
contaminated blood/food/soil - 饮用水被铅污染了。
The drinking water has become contaminated with lead.
从这个概念出发， contaminate 进而用来喻指“玷污、毒害、腐蚀”人的思想或品德等，比如：
