Dispel 是一个容易与小站（微信公众号：田间小站）一年前推送过的 expel 相混淆的单词。这两个单词词根相同，前缀不同。
其中， dispel 由前缀 dis- （分散）+词根 pel （驱动；推）构成，15世纪由拉丁语 dispellere （驱散）进入英语后，也是用来表示“驱散、消除”，多指通过证明是错误的或不必要的来消除恐惧、沮丧、怀疑、反对、担心、信念等。
由于含有使向不同方向散开而赶走或消失之义，所以 dispel 只接可以四散的事物，包括浓雾（thick fog）、一群野狗（a pack of wild dogs），而不用于单一、不可分割的事物，比如：
