Hamper 是一个与熟词 hammer 较为形似的单词。该词虽然现在常用作动词，但最早出现于14世纪初时是作名词表示“大篮子”，现在尤指用于盛食物以及刀、叉、匙、盘子等餐具的“带盖大篮子”，一般有提手和铰链盖，比如野餐篮（a picnic hamper）。
出现在英式英语中时， hamper 还可以表示装有各种食品、酒水饮料的“礼物篮”或者说作为礼品的“食物盒、盒装食物、袋装食物”，常用于特殊场合，比如圣诞礼品篮（a Christmas hamper）。
但在美式英语中， hamper 却是常用来表示“盛脏衣服、脏床单等的带盖大篮子”，同英式英语中的 laundry basket 。
Hamper 的动词含义则是到了14世纪末才开始出现，词源不详，可能是源自上述名词含义，主要指“妨碍、阻止、阻碍”某人轻易地做某事或实现某事，可以表示以任何妨碍或束缚性的力量使一种行为受到阻碍、拖延或干预，强调因受到约束或阻碍而造成的行动困难，比如：
