深入解读
Feckless 是一个与常见单词 reckless 容易相混淆的单词。通过该词后半部分的 less 不难猜到 feckless 指的是缺乏 feck ，但紧接着就会奇怪 feck 又是什么呢？
其实， feck 是苏格兰语，变体自古英语 effect 。因而 feckless 的本义也就是“无效的、无益的”，对应 without effect 或者说 ineffective 。
发展到现在， feckless 则主要指人、生活方式等“无能的、无目的的、窝窝囊囊的”以及态度、行为等“不负责任的”，侧重指性格软弱，缺乏决心或主动性，以至于无法正确地做任何事情，特别是没有勇气以任何有意义的方式采取行动，常意味着没有在人生中取得什么成就，比如：
- 她的已故丈夫是个讨人喜欢但却懒惰没有出息的人。
Her late husband was a charming, but lazy and feckless man. - 他被描述成一个蔫头耷脑的醉汉。他那很特别的口音表明他是外地人。
He was portrayed as a feckless drunk. His peculiar accent proclaimed him a stranger here.
