深入解读
Linger 是一个与常见单词 finger, singer, ginger 等有着相同结尾的单词,主要用来表示“逗留、流连、徘徊、磨蹭”,多指因不愿离开而在某个地方停留超过必要的时间,也可以指目光持续看某人或大脑持续思考某事的时间比通常要长,比如:
- 她在大厅里逗留了几分钟。
She lingered for a few minutes in the lobby. - 他的目光滞留在她丰满的曲线上。
His eyes lingered on her ample curves.
进而 linger 也可以用来形容味道、怀疑、记忆、战争等“继续存留、缓慢消失”,也就是尽管强度、重要性、影响力等在减弱,但继续存留的时间比预期或想要的要长,比如:
将这个概念用在生命垂危的人、濒临消失的传统等上时,则可以用 linger 引申指“苟延残喘、奄奄一息”,也就是尽管在逐渐衰亡或走向死亡,但仍然保持存活或存在,比如:
- 那位德高望重的老人中风后拖了几个月才去世。
