区别辨析rock、stone、gravel与pebble

rock、stone、gravel与pebble这些名词均含“石、石头”之意。

rock : 普通用词，指构成地表最坚硬部分或突出于周围地面的巨大岩石，也可指石头或石块。

• 示威者挤满了街道，并向警察投掷石块，警察则还以颜色，向人群发射空弹。
  The demonstrators crammed the streets and threw rocks at the police, who retaliated by firing blanks into the crowd.

stone : 普通用词，泛指井然的或经加工的各类石头，可大可小。

• 那个著名建筑师用锤子把楔子砸入石缝里。
  The eminent architect hammered the wedge into the crack in the stone.

gravel : 集合名词，常指用于铺路的小石子和沙砾。

• I crunched across the gravel to the front door.
  我嘎吱嘎吱走过石子路来到前门。

pebble : 多指海边、河边或沙中圆形的小卵石。

• You throw a pebble in a pool and it ripples.
  往池塘里扔块鹅卵石就会激起一片涟漪。
