Prosper 一词源自拉丁语 prosperus (繁荣的、幸运的、有利的),于14世纪中期经古法语 prosperer 或者直接由拉丁语 prosperare (使成功、使幸福)进入英语,即用来表示国家、经济、生意、人等“兴旺、繁荣、昌盛、富有、成功”,主要指企事业经营取得成功,尤其是在经济、财务或物质上取得成功,比如:
- 这个社会弃儿靠着坚毅顽强和勤劳不懈发达起来了。
With great perseverance and untiring industry, the pariah prospered. - 这家濒临破产的公司在他的管理下兴旺了起来。
The moribund company prospered under his management.
此外, prosper 还可以进一步用来表示身体“变得更强壮或健康”,比如:
