深入解读
Resounding 这个单词虽然比较长，其实很好记，就是动词 resound （回响；回荡着）的现在分词而已。因此，其本义便是指声音“回声的、回响的、发出回声的、激起共鸣的”或者说“响亮的、洪亮的、嘹亮的”，即声音的响度或饱满度大到足以引起回声，比如：
- 那个冒牌医生狠狠掴了他一巴掌，声音响亮干脆。
There was a resounding slap as the bogus doctor struck him violently across the face.
从这个概念出发，等了17世纪30年代后， resounding 开始引申指“彻底的、完全的、轰动的、惊人的、巨大的、令人瞩目的”，仅用在名词前，主要用来强调事物之好或坏十分突出，像能够引起回声的响亮声音那般非常明确、毫无疑问，比如：
- 如果没有这个小小的失误，这就是一次彻底的胜利。
This is the one blemish on an otherwise resounding success. - 这场秘密政变完全失败了。
The covert coup was a resounding failure.
