Rampage 是本周《经济学人》（2022年11月12日刊）封面上以小标题“New York's rampaging rats”出现的一个单词。同时，对于爱玩王者荣耀或英雄联盟的小伙伴来说， rampage 也是一个非常耳熟的单词。而电影爱好者们此时则会想起2018年上映的科幻动作片《狂暴巨兽》（Rampage）来。
该词可能与小站（微信公众号：田间小站）两年前推送的 rampant 同源，都源自古法语 ramper （爬、攀登、登上）。从张牙舞爪的野兽以后腿为支点似攀登状跃立并扬起前爪扑击的概念出发， rampage 最早于1692年起开始在英语中用来表示“横冲直撞”，现在主要指一大群人或动物以暴力、野蛮或无法控制的方式成群结队地四处奔走，通常十分嘈杂并造成破坏，比如：
