深入解读
对于前不久看过今年上映的美国动作剧情片《壮志凌云2：独行侠》（Top Gun: Maverick）或者以前看过空战老片《壮志凌云》（Top Gun）的小伙伴们来说， maverick 是一个很为熟悉的单词了，因为影片中汤姆·克鲁斯所饰演主角的代号就是“Maverick（独行侠）”。
而 maverick 一词本身最初就是个人名。相传在19世纪时，德克萨斯州有位律师叫做 Samuel A. Maverick 。他的一位客户用400头牛来偿还欠他的1200美元债务，但是 Maverick 对养牛并无兴趣，也不给牛打上烙印，就让牛群在一名雇员的看管下自由游荡。
邻近的牧民发现后，就把 Maverick 的牛悄悄捉走，并打上自己的烙印。Maverick 最终意识到了自己的愚蠢，并赶紧将他所剩无几的畜群（his depleted herd）卖掉了。
从这个故事出发， maverick 一词很自然地就在美式英语中用来表示“未打烙印的牧区牲畜”，尤指未打烙印的小牛。
