在上周五推送的 单词双拼 | 打开新世界的 gateway 一文所用《奇异博士》（Doctor Strange）的影视片段中出现了 conjure 一词，今天小站（微信公众号：田间小站）就来聊一聊它。
该词不仅与熟词 injure 结尾相同，并且两者同词根 jur, juris （发誓；法律），其中 conjure 由前缀 con- （共同）+ 词根 jur + e 构成，13世纪末经古法语 conjurer （祈求、恳求；合谋、密谋）或者直接经拉丁语 coniurare （一起发誓；密谋）进入英语后，原指“（发誓）恳求、祈求”以及“搞阴谋、密谋策划、搞阴谋时立誓入盟”。
不过这些含义现已不再流行，转而到了14世纪后， conjure 从用咒语（spell）来约束恶魔听命这个概念出发，开始发展出现在的基本含义指通过念咒等魔法仪式“召唤或驱赶”恶魔、神灵、鬼魂、幽灵等出现或消失。
除了咒语、魔法以外，也可以通过某个神圣的名字来召唤它们。因而短语 a name to conjure with 便可以反过来表示“重要人物或组织的名字”或者说“有影响力的名字”，比如：
- 到1920年，福克斯和环球已经声名显赫。而洛氏公司刚刚接管大都会影业，开启了最终催生了米高梅的一系列合并。

从召唤某物凭空出现或消失这个概念出发， conjure 很自然地就被用来引申指“变魔术、变戏法般地出现或消失”，主要指使某物出人意料地或似乎不知从哪里冒出来或消失去，仿佛是施了魔法那般，比如：

而 conjure up 这个短语动词除了可以表示“变魔术、变戏法般地出现”外，还在16世纪80年代后开始衍生指“使呈现于脑海”或者说“使想起、使联想起、使想象出”，主要指单词、声音、气味等使某人感觉到或想起某个事物，就像变魔术般地以图画形式出现在脑海，比如：
