Hone 是一个与熟词 home 十分形似的单词，该词源自古英语 han （石头、岩石、界石）以及古北欧语 hein （磨尖），14世纪初期出现在英语中后最初作名词表示“磨刀石”，尤指磨剃刀的“细磨石、油石”。
等到了1788年后， hone 开始用作动词相应表示“在磨石上将……磨尖、磨快、磨光”。再从这个概念出发，很自然地就用 hone 喻指“磨炼、磨砺、锤炼、训练”，主要指在很长一段时间内对某项技能、技术、想法、产品、文章等进行完善或提升，以完全符合想要达到的目的，也包括使身体或身体某个部位锻炼得更有力量或更加结实，比如：
