Eloquent 一词源自拉丁语 eloqui (响亮或清楚地说),由前缀 e- (加强)+词根 loqu (说话)+后缀 -ent (具有……性质的、关于……的)构成,14世纪末经古法语 eloquent 进入英语后即用来表示“雄辩的、口才流利的、能言善辩的”,常指人说话流畅有力,以热情动人的语言表达进行强烈的情感刺激,特别是在公共场合中,比如:
- 有口才的人善于用词。
An eloquent speaker is one skilled in the use of words. - 这位书迷说起自己对书的喜爱来就会停不住嘴。
The avid reader was eloquent about his love of books.
除了形容人以外, eloquent 也可以用来形容言辞、文字、表情、动作、图片等“表达生动的、有说服力的、明白显示出的、传神达意的”,即能够生动地或动人地表达或揭示某事,从而有效地说服人,比如:
- 他闪亮的凝视目光传神地表达了他的恳求。
