Manipulate 一词逆构自英语单词 manipulation （操纵），最早于1827年出现在英语中用来表示“操作、使用”，主要指熟练、灵巧地操作或控制某些需要技巧的工具、机械装置等，现在也包括操作计算机更改、编辑或移动文本、数据等，比如：
- 我们公司将推出一项使用一支笔来操作电脑的新技术。
Our company will debut a new technology which uses a pen to manipulate a computer.
等到了1864年后， manipulate 开始用来喻指暗中“控制、操纵、影响”，常作贬义词使用，尤指使用权势或不正当的手段来巧妙地、狡猾地或肆无忌惮地控制或影响某个人或某个局势，比如：
- 那个浑身上下每个毛孔都散发着性感的女孩利用自身的魅力来摆布他人。
The girl who oozes sexuality from every pore uses her charm to manipulate people. - 那个衣冠楚楚、野心勃勃的政客以反问答问。他知道如何左右公众舆论。
