Insulate 是一个与小站之前推送过的 peninsula 同词根的单词,由词根 insul (岛屿)+后缀 ate (做、造成、使)构成,源自拉丁语 insulatus (使像个岛一样),16世纪30年代进入英语后本是指“使陆地变成一个岛”,不过这个含义现已不再流行。
转而到了1742年后, insulate 开始用在物理学上引申指“使绝缘、使隔热”以及现在还可以指“使隔音”,即通过插入、覆盖或包围防止电流通过、热量损失或声音侵扰的材料来保护某物,常用搭配 insulate sth (from/against sth) ,比如:
- 为安全起见,该元件作了绝缘处理。

再到了1785年后, insulate 进一步用来表示“隔离、使隔绝”,多指通过某种屏障将某人或某个群体与社会其他部分或外界影响隔绝开来,以保护其免受有害影响或避免经历不愉快的事,常用搭配 insulate sb/sth from/against sth ,比如:
- 富裕国家并不总是能够为自己备好药物以抵御新发疾病的蹂躏。
