Myriad 是一个很容易让人联想起 pyramid （金字塔、棱锥体）的单词，该词源自希腊语 myrioi （1万），16世纪中期经古法语 myriade 以及后期拉丁语 myrias 进入英语，最初也是用来表示“1万”这个数量，不过这个含义如今通常仅用在希腊语或拉丁语的翻译中。
发展到现在，更多的是用 myriad 喻指“无数、大量”或“各种各样”，常作书面用语形容数量极其巨大或者种类极其之多，到了数不清的地步，比如：
