该词源自拉丁语 indigena （土生土长的），17世纪中期经晚期拉丁语 indigenus （出生于某个国家的、本地的）进入英语，也是用来表示“本土的、本地的、当地的、土生土长的”，多指某个物种、种族或事物自然起源于或出现在某个特定的地方或国家，而不是从他处来的，其涉及地域范围较大，诸如一个国家或某个具有特定气候类型的地区，比如：
