在小站（微信公众号：田间小站）上周推送的 小词详解 | sordid 的留言区，有小伙伴提到很容易将 sordid 与 candid 弄混，今天就来专门说说后者。
Candid 一词比较好记，可以简单拆成 can + did 来记忆。该词与熟词 candle （蜡烛）同源，都是源自拉丁语 candere （发光），17世纪20年代进入英语后最初用来表示“白色的”，比如：
- 他打开了比利的手铐，然后用灭火器把白色的火焰扑灭。
He unbolted the shackles on Billy's hands and doused the candid flames with a fire extinguisher.
通常，白色意味着纯洁、公正、正直、端庄等美好的含义。相应的，到了17世纪70年代后， candid 开始用来喻指“坦率的、坦诚的、直言不讳的、率直的”以及“公正的、不偏不倚的”，常与 frank 可以互换使用，有时候更为明显地意味着一种根本的诚实和公正，并且对棘手或令人痛苦之事毫不回避，也不受偏见或恐惧的支配，比如：
- 她对眼下和她分居丈夫之间的问题毫不隐瞒。
She is candid about the problems she is having with her estranged husband. - 跟你说实话，我觉得你没资格得到奖学金。

等到了1929年后， candid 又被用在摄影领域表示“抓拍的、偷拍的”，主要指照片是在被拍摄主体不知情时拍摄的，即意味着照片不是装模作样摆姿势拍出来的，比如：
