Eligible 一词与熟词 election （选举）同源，都是源自拉丁语 eligere （选择），15世纪初经古法语 eligible （适合选择的）进入英语后即用来表示“有资格的、符合条件的、合格的”，常指人因具备相应的资格、年龄、能力等而有权做或获得某个事物，尤其是有资格选举或参选的，以及在法律或道德上合格的，比如：
