Appal 是一个与熟词 apple （苹果）较为形似的单词，同时也容易与熟词 appeal （上诉、申诉；呼吁、恳求）相混淆。该词源自拉丁语 pallere （使变苍白），14世纪初经古法语 apalir （变得或使变得苍白）进入英语，先后表示“变淡”和“逐渐变得苍白”。
不过这些含义现已都不再流行，转而到了16世纪30年代发展为今义指“使大为震惊或惊骇”，常强调当人面对某些令人不安、困惑或震惊并又超出自己改变能力的事情时所引起的无能感，有时也意味着一种压倒性的、使人吓得发呆的恐惧或恐怖，比如：
- 农村地区医生之少令我震惊。
I was appalled by the dearth of doctors in the rural areas. - 一位勤勉的警官被指控帮助一个贩毒黑帮铲平敌对帮派，这令我非常诧异。
It appalled me that an industrious police officer was accused of helping a drug gang eliminate rivals.
值得注意的是， appal 在美式英语中常拼作 appall ，而两者的现在分词、过去式、过去分词都双写 ll 分别拼作 appalling, appalled 和 appalled 。
其中，现在分词 appalling 除了相应表示“令人震惊的、使人惊骇的、骇人听闻的”以外，还可以指“极为恶劣的”，以及在口语中表示“糟透的、极坏的”，常意味着差到令人震惊或哑口无言的地步，比如：
- 他们国家的铁路服务现在糟透了。
The rail service in their country is appalling now. - 对于那些仍然生活在恶劣环境中的人来说，这并没有缓解他们的情绪。
