深入解读
说起 prism 一词来，老铁们不难回想起前几个月小站（微信公众号：田间小站）在 小词详解 | prune 中提到：习语 prunes and prism(s) 表示言行的“装腔作势、矫揉造作”，出自于狄更斯的小说《小杜丽 》（Little Dorrit），因说 prunes 和 prism 等词时嘴型比较好看引申而来。
而对前些年斯诺登事件稍有关注的小伙伴们而言，可能更容易联想起一项由美国国家安全局自2007年开始实施的绝密级网络监控监听计划——棱镜计划（PRISM）来。
具体来说，该词源自希腊语 prisma （几何棱镜、三棱柱），16世纪60年代进入英语后开始出现在几何学中表示“棱柱、棱柱体”，比如：
- 斜棱柱
an oblique prism - 直棱柱
a right prism - 正棱柱
a regular prism - 三棱柱
a triangular prism
然后到了17世纪10年代后， prism 开始出现在光学中表示“棱镜”，尤指“三棱镜”，由抛光玻璃或水晶制成，用以分光或使光束发生色散。现在， prism 也可以指水滴等“折光物”以及枝形吊灯的玻璃吊灯架等“刻花玻璃物体”。
而从分光或使光束发生色散这个概念出发， prism 既可以用来喻指“阐明”，也可以用来喻指“曲解、扭曲”，即通过时间、记忆、媒介或某一个特定观点来看待事物时，既有可能帮助看清事物的本质，也有可能想法会受其影响而发生曲解或扭曲，比如：
- 时间模糊了记忆，我几乎想不起我那精明叔父年轻时的样子。
Through the smoky prism of time, I could just barely make out my shrewd uncle as a young man. - 他们被迫通过电视这个棱镜来想象这场惨败。
They were forced to imagine the debacle through the prism of television.
