Endorse 一词源自拉丁语 dorsum (背部),15世纪经古法语 endosser (放在背面)进入英语,原拼作 endosse ,最初是指在文件背面“签字”或“批注”,现在多指在支票、汇票等票据背面“签名、背书”,比如:
- 该票据需要背书。
The bill needs to be endorsed.
在文件、票据的背面签字实质上就是对其表示认可、同意或支持,因此 endorse 后来就被用来引申指“支持、认可、赞同”,现在多指通过明确的陈述公开表示支持或赞同某人、某个声明或某个行动方针,比如:
- 他来信的主要意思是他完全赞同主席所说的一切。
The purport of his letter was that he fully endorsed everything the Chairperson had said.
这个概念用在广告领域中时,则表示“宣传、代言”某一产品,即在广告中说自己使用并喜欢某种产品,以促使消费者购买,比如:
- 看到这位世界冠军在第一轮比赛中就被淘汰,他们大吃一惊,因为他们刚付给他500万美元,请他给他们的新产品做广告。
